Project Description

Chico's National Store Support Center
130,000 s.f. commercial building
Chico's green efforts included the following innovative strategies:
• Fleet of electric and solar powered golf carts are utilized by Associates while on campus in lieu of combustion vehicles to reduce fossil fuel use and emissions.
• Food Service purchases local and organic products and uses plates, cups, and utensils made from biodegradable, compostable material.
• Associate Wellness Program - The fully outfitted Campus Wellness Center features no-cost personal trainers, diet counseling, and smoking cessation programs. There are also outdoor walking and running trails on campus and encouragement for bicycling. Incentives for health insurance programs are offered for Associates who participate in these programs.
• Employee Training - Every Chico's employee attends an intensive training program as a part of the employment process. In addition to the normal company "Policies & Procedures," a significant amount of time is spent on explaining the campus-wide recycling program, preferred parking program, onsite access to basic services, and Green Initiatives Policy. A brochure is also included outlining the sustainable attributes included in Building 10.
• Green Policy - As a result of the FGBC experience, several of Chico's standard operating procedures regarding sustainability have been formalized as policy, such as green housekeeping and pest control.
• Onsite Services - Chico's provides a large array of onsite basic services to Associates, not typical of this type of business. Some are outlined in the FGBC credit for “Access to Basic Services,” but Chico’s continues to expand the program and eliminate the need for additional travel miles.

Green Achievements

  • ENERGY: Focus on fossil fuel reduction using occupancy sensors and lighting controls to conserve energy
  • WATER: Interior water use reduction from low flow fixtures. Exterior water use reduction achieved by following and certifying the landscape based on the Florida Friendly Landscape principles
  • SITE: The project campus setting provides the project with adjacent basic services, allows for open space on site, designated outdoor space for employees, and encourages multi-modal transportation
  • HEALTH: Design strategies and selection of materials to improve indoor air quality
  • MATERIAL: Use of recycled content materials and on site recycling of construction waste to minimize environmental impacts of the project
  • DISASTER MITIGATION: Use of passive design such as impact glazing, building hardening, and back up generators to improve durability and operational stability.
  • Project team utilized Building Information Modeling process to improve the efficiencies related to design, estimating, materials ordering and construction.
  • All trees and plants were selected from Florida Friendly Plant list to be compatible with local environment / microclimate
  • Plants with similar maintenance and water requirements were grouped together
  • Earned Florida Friendly Landscape Program Certification
  • Reduced the amount of supplemental water, potable and non potable, needed for irrigation.
  • FDEP Certified Erosion and Sedimentation Control Professional employed by the General Contractor.
  • Structure located within a designated Urban Growth Boundary
  • Parking on site is less than required by local jurisdiction and provides preferred parking for carpools and vanpools
  • Roof was designed to reduce the heat island effect
  • Collects and treats stormwater from building site and adjacent properties to assist in controlling both the water quantity and quality of stormwater in the community.
  • Provides preferred parking for low-emitting, fuel-efficient and high occupancy vehicles.
  • Provides bicycle racks, shower facilities and changing rooms for cyclists
  • Exterior lighting selected provides a minimum of 95 lumens/watt.
  • 100% of full time occupants can control individual lighting either through ambient or task lighting
  • 75% of occupied spaces receive natural light and have direct line of site to the exterior
  • Provided an accessible area dedicated to the separation, collection and storage of materials for recycling.
  • 20% of materials used in construction contained recycled content.
  • 50% of construction and demolition waste was salvaged or recycled and diverted from landfills
  • 50% of Interior wall partitions are constructed from demountable / adaptable partitions.
  • Building is engineered to withstand design pressures that are 20 mph greater than building code requirements for the area
  • All of the windows installed are impact resistant
  • Building is able to continue operations during power loss by utilizing renewable energy or generators for a minimum of 8 hours per day for 3 days
  • Building and mechanical equipment pads were designed to be at least 12" above 100 year flood plain or grade whichever is higher
  • Project utilizes Fire Resistant Exterior Wall cladding, roof covering or Subroof, Soffit and Vent materials
