FGBC receives 2004 Sustainable Florida Award for Outstanding Achievement
Five years of hard work and thousands of volunteer hours have paid off in recognition for the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC). In May, FGBC was awarded top honors from the Council for Sustainable Florida (CSF) for FGBC's successful development of green standards that help to guide the growth of Florida. Executive Director Roy Bonnell and President Karen Childress traveled to Tallahassee to receive the award and personal congratulations from Governor Bush and each of his cabinet members. " One goal of FGBC is to help Floridians have healthier more earth friendly homes and communities. The standards that FGBC has developed provide guidelines to make this a reality," said Childress.

Green standards developed by FGBC are available for homes, commercial buildings, developments and municipalities. "No other state has a green guideline program as comprehensive as what is currently available in Florida ," said Bonnell.

The Council for Sustainable Florida, a program of the Collins Center for Public Policy, gives annual awards for leadership in sustainability. More information about the 2004 sustainability awards can be found at http://www.sustainableflorida.org/pdfs/2004SuccessStories.pdf.

Beginning in 2004, a new category - the FGBC Green Home Aurora - was offered. This award is designed to recognize home building partnerships that have resulted in the construction/renovation of homes that meet the Florida Green Home Designation Standard, administered by the Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc (FGBC). Due to the fact that the Florida Green Home Designation is only available to homes built in the State of Florida , the FGBC Green Home Aurora is only available to homes built within the State of Florida .

For the 2004 award, any home that had achieved a FGBC Green Home Certificate by May 11, 2004 , could enter under any one of four categories:

  • Affordable Category (<$150,000 base price of home and lot plus options)
  • Production Category (6+ homes of the same plan have been certified)
  • Custom or Luxury (>$150,000 base price of home and lot plus options)
  • Demonstration Model (Model home that incorporates educational aspects/events)

A total of seven certified homes submitted applications for the awards. The primary judging criteria for each award category was the Florida Green Home Designation Standard Score that each home achieved. In the event that Green Home Designation Standard Scores were within 5 pts of each other, secondary judging criteria was employed including environmental mission statements, industry partnerships and other awards programs, green marketing & sales strategies, and educational efforts targeting green designation features & benefits. Winners will be announced on August 7, 2004 during the South East Builders Conference.

FGBC, Inc. extends a warm thanks to all those who applied for the 2004 awards.
